Of course, Vandyke and Rubens were Flemish, not Dutch. As high commission court painters they had to follow fashion, not their ideals. Poor Vermeer with all his tricks to substitute for his defective eyesight and his ugly daughters couldn't even support himself with fancy dress posed paintings. Too bad he was too early to do photographs.
