RE:"I would like to hear from an Intel system performance architect how Rambus is worth the continuing headache and black eye it is causing Intel. Not that Intel has been executing well lately by any stretch of the imagination, but why tie a supposed great Willamette chip to a chip that's just memory and has so many issues? I agree, take it out and shoot it"

I would think the Intel system performance and decision making management are heavy into "cringe" right now. Lot's of C. Y. A. I suspect. I guess they should have checked more with the cost and supply side people. Actually this type of problem goes way back. Not the first time that a super duper design has failed because of lack of manufacturability.
I do believe that Intel is starting to head in the right direction with the Solano 815 and a DDR chipset for Willamette but like our resident chip design man, Scumbria
once said, "do you know how long it takes to design and produce a chipset"? The obvious answer is a lot longer than you think. Seems the unofficial stance is now, if RAMBUS makes it...it makes it but we have to port to DDR and 133MHz SDRAM. The main thing holding up Rambus stock has to be the hope of a court decision that says they get some royalties on DDR.
So Intel decides to switch lanes and port Timmy to SDRAM...delayed until Q1, 2001...I'd say it's pretty much finished...died of HALLAtosis...this was Andys baby wasn't it? Coppermines will be really cheap by the time Timmy is supposed to hit vis a vie the X-box and Timmy won't be able to scale with Coppermine. Also, Willy and Athlon effectively kill Timmy as well...1.4 GHZ by then...
