Federal broad brush laws aren't needed.
The problem with gun control in the cities, and unrestricted access in rural communities is that the city criminals would just go to the countryside to pick up weapons.

The type of federal controls supported by me and most liberals really go back to the ideals present in that small town of my childhood. Nobody gets a gun who is not known to be of good character. We can't expect the shop retailer to know everyone, so formal checks are needed. We weren't allow out with a rifle until we had completed the 4-H checkout (which included both skill and attitude). Similar training requirements are reasonable for the community as a whole. Finally we could get in trouble if we lost, loaned, or gave our weapons to someone who was a troublemaker. I support not only the registration of a weapon, but every 5 years or so, the registrant should be compelled to show that the weapon is still under their control. All these things were considered common sense in my youth, laws are just a way to formalize this common sense in a way suitable for large populations.
