US corporate layoffs 27 pct lower in May-Challenger

NEW YORK, June 6 (Reuters) - U.S. corporations cut 27,036 jobs, 27 percent fewer in May than in April, the international outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported on Tuesday.

in its monthly job-cuts report, the firm said the May figure marked the lowest level of corporate downsizing since last fall. The May 2000 figure is 51 percent below the May 1999 number.

The May figure is just the second time in 17 months that job cut fell below 30,000.

In a statement released by the firm, John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray and Christmas, said "the labor shortage has reached a point where the President should call a labor summit to review all of the possibilities to solve what some industries see as a crisis situation."

Challenger suggested that should the labor shortage continue unchecked, America's competitive advantage in the global economy could be at risk.
