Re: So who is working with a killer IBM server chip? IBM themselves is working with Itanium, last I saw.

Tony,

IBM isn't going to sell its chips and create a commodity market.

IBM is working with Itanium just to hedge its bets. Originally when I was hired I questioned IBM's commitment to their own 64-bit chips because of the support for Itanium. Now I've been there long enough to learn how much of a joke IA64 is. IBM has learned from past mistakes that they can't dictate the market, so if Itanium becomes the commodity chip, IBM will be ready. (if only Intel could learn this with RAMBUS)

IBM will most likely leverage Itanium in PC's and low level servers, much like the netfinity line today. Itanium won't be in any big iron, if you think it will, you're only kidding yourself.

Java will really hold back IA64.
