We've had the mama cat and kittens for a week, now, and there are two things that puzzle me, sort of.
First of all, the mama cat never meows. She never says mew, she never says yowl, she never says anything cats say. All she ever does is whirr. That's the kind of noise mama cats make when they call their kittens, and she whirrs a lot. They don't seem to listen that much, earlier in the week they would come running, but now she has to hunt them down, and they wrestle with her when she tries to lick their bottoms. So she sits by herself, and whirrs.
She's just a baby cat, herself, this must be her first litter, and she's certainly not a year old. My guess, eight months to ten months.
The other thing is the way she goes after our other cats. No warning, no hissing, no posturing, she just crouches down and launches, like a heat-seeking missile. I've seen her move through a couple of rooms going after another cat, she looks more like a weasel or a snake, moving at supersonic speeds. Today she streaked past me in the living room, through the hall, and up the stairs into my room, but there wasn't another cat in there. Really fast, like a tortoiseshell blur.
I am sure the kittens are cats, but I am not sure the mama is a cat. She doesn't sound like a cat, she doesn't move like a cat. She does purr, though. Actually, the kittens don't say meow, either. They squeak. |
