<a poster mentioned that he had a stock position ... in DM>

this is original, uncut BS. There is no local currencies anymore in Euro stock markets. Everything everywhere (within the euro members) is traded in euros. Nokia in Helsinki same as BMW in Munich or Generali in Rome. What possibly the poster meant, is that he bought something german (lets say Mannesman or whatever) and he can say either

o - "hey, look euro is rising and my position is doing even better than expected" or
o - "darn, euro is falling some more, but dont forget it's a german position".

<trade .... all in Euros (for purposes of easy cross exchange trading)???> Thats the whole idea. The replacement of local currencies started in financial environment first - I think about a year ago - Stocks n Bonds, financial reporting, interbank trading etc. In a year the little man in the street follows - we're now getting primed to think in eu also, price stickers etc -.
