The carburetor is the thing that mixes air with the fuel, so it should be found somewhere under the air cleaner. Sounds like a good time to drop a few hints at your neighbor or somebody nice enough to volunteer to have a look at it. Good luck, hope you can avoid having to take it to the shop.
