OT--will My education comes from three deaths and one serious illness in my family over the last five years. Don't assume because you've executed an Advance Medical Directive or a Health Care Power of Attorney that it will be honored...unless your family is all on the same page re: your wishes and your POA can throw his or her weight around with a recalcitrant medical staff. The magic words are "Have your legal counsel call me as I'll be calling mine to prepare a suit under the Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990." That gets their attention. After witnessing what I went through with my family a friend, who is an RN, contemplated having DNR tatooed on her chest for good measure.
