Coherent Cancels More South African Echoes
LEESBURG, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 1997--Leading voice enhancement and echo cancellation specialist, Coherent Communications Systems (NASDAQ:CCSC) has recently supplied a further consignment of EC-6000 Series 2 Digital Echo Cancellers to Telkom SA. The units are to be installed at Telkom SA's two international exchanges in Johannesburg, which are equipped with Siemens switches, with a total of just under 300 groups of Coherent cancellers now in operation.
Telkom SA's international services use a variety of facilities including terrestrial, satellite and submarine cable routes. Traffic is primarily regional African activity - particularly to Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland - and Telkom SA is also witnessing a rise in traffic to and from the United States, Europe and the Far East. Telkom SA has been a long-term user of Coherent's echo cancellation technology, first implementing EC-6000s on its network in 1993. Brian Herbert, Acting Manager, International Maintenance Centre (IMC), comments: ``Our initial evaluation of echo cancellation equipment in the early 1990s involved three different manufacturers - we conducted a trial in conjunction with another country, who was also looking to change over from echo suppression, and monitored call duration over a number of months, switching between cancellers and the existing suppressers. There was clear evidence of longer call duration by a number of seconds, which cumulatively represented a huge potential for extra revenue. We were also looking for the cancellers' reaction to high signal levels, measuring performance closely on this aspect.
``Our requirement has progressed considerably from these early trials, which resulted in our installing digital echo cancellation with Coherent's EC-6000 units at our international exchanges. Today, we are looking for the ability to measure such aspects as the average propagation delay on the network through the canceller, particularly in the wake of introducing radio network technology, and we also want to measure average levels, monitoring high levels in particular, as well as bit error rates. The echo canceller sits at the very front end of the network and therefore provides the ideal access point for this type of information. We have been working closely with Coherent to develop this aspect, as we believe it is crucial to our TMN strategy. As we switch from C5 to C7 signalling, we are also looking for greater configurability of the alarm functions within the echo cancellers - developments which will give us greater monitoring capability in the future.''
Coherent's focus is to provide telcos, PTTs and network operators with the tools to maximize network performance and voice quality on wireline and wireless networks, across the full range of applications. The Company specializes in providing a complete turnkey service, encompassing all aspects of design, supply, installation and maintenance of the cancellers and associated network equipment.
Designed to exceed current ITU-T standards, Coherent's products provide a flexible operating platform which can be tailored for a range of applications and network environments. At their core is a combination of Coherent's state of the art ASIC devices, patented Non-Linear Processor (NLP) techniques, as well as fast and stable convergence (50mS for combined ERL and ERLE of 35dB) - prerequisites for modern network applications.
The EC-6000 Series 2 Digital Echo Canceller supports Coherent's range of application-specific software, enhancing the unit's adaptability for a wide range of problem-solving in different network situations. Software can be remotely downloaded and upgraded, providing a versatile and cost-effective means of maintaining maximum operational flexibility. In addition, the unit features local loopback facilities, extensive alarm reporting and self-test diagnostics, as well as significantly reduced power consumption for improved performance and reduced heat generation.
