      BINGHAMTON, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1997--Semiconductor  Laser International Corp. (SLI) (NASDAQ: SLIC, SLICW), announced  today that the company has been awarded a two year contract, with an  option for an additional three years, by the United States Air Force  (USAF) Phillips Laboratory.           According to the terms of the contract, SLI will provide the  USAF Phillips Laboratory with state-of-the-art semiconductor laser  fabrication technology, including epitaxial crystal growth, wafer  processing and device packaging.  SLI's technology will be used by the  Laboratory to further the High Power Semiconductor Laser Technology  Program (HPSLT) under the Laser and Imaging Directorate (LIDA) of  Phillips Laboratory.           The USAF Phillips Laboratory is recognized as one of the leading  United States National Laboratories in semiconductor laser research.   In a statement in the Jan. 9, 1997 issue of Technology Edge, a  newsletter of the USAF Phillips Laboratory, Lt. General Roger G.  DeKok, commander of the Air Force and Missile System Center, LA  Air Force Base, CA, said, "Phillips Laboratory is the best space  research institution in the world and its role in the post-Cold War  environment is crucial to this nation's security now and in the  future."           According to Dr. Xinqiao Wang, manager of research and  development for SLI, "This contract will enable SLI to participate  in some of the most exciting and novel research in the field of high  power semiconductor diode lasers.  We will demonstrate SLI's  capabilities as a foremost fabricator of high quality, high power  semiconductor diode lasers.  With our advanced equipment, processes  and technology, we expect to meet the exacting requirements of the  LIDA in order to further its research in high power lasers."
