In Latin America, the church has much to be blamed for both, the treatment given to the natives in the past, and for the present uncontrolled population explosion that is killing any possibility for progress in Lat Am.
I think that's too "facile" <the other facile, Marcos> an explanation. Bunches of babies are born in Ethiopia and Russia right smack in the middle of turmoil, starvation, and even war. Babies are born in the U.S. to parents who are too immature, to unsettled, too insecure, too shallow, too immoral, too scared, too sick, etc. etc. to care for them. Mayor Marion Barry in D.C. once asked a welfare mom with 14 why she had so many kids that family services couldn't even find a house big enough for her family. She said it was her right and none of his business. One of those little mysteries of life, I guess.
