Saddam used to be an ally while he was fighting Iran. that war was a great boon to the French defense industry if i remember correctly. they sold weapons to both parties. of course, there was no danger of either Iraq or Iran actually winning that war, but it kept them busy.
Kuwait was a different kettle of fish...all of a sudden it looked like Saddam would control a lot of oil...and the Saudis were scared they would be next.
actually from a military strategy PoV he should have invaded Saudi Arabia right away...then there wouldn't have been a spot for the US/British forces to land.
he could've have become a prime nuisance that way.
it often seems to me that the house of Saud, as well as the Kuwaiti ruling family are now under the US thumb completely...their security is guaranteed in exchange for not letting crude oil prices get out of hand.
