For the same reason that Intel opened its big mouth and revealing its hand to AMD.

Also, I do think Thunderbird will be competitive with Willamete. During an interview last week, Herb said AMD's road map calls for 1.5 GHz by year end and 2.0 GHz by the middle of 2001. I do not think Willamette will be much higher if any.
