I think most customers did not understand the success of AMES, which is turn over. Your size must be very popular. If you don't buy it, its gone. You have to go back next day or next week. The AMES experience is every day you go in their store, they have something new that you don't have at your home; if you shop frequently at AMES.

When I shop at AMES, I buy all the size I wear which is L. After I shop, you won't find the size in the line that I like. Better luck tomorrow or next week or next year. This creates a turn over mentality. If AMES management don't sell any in two weeks, they have to discount further on those merchandise to get rid of the slow movers.

As far as employees go, they are now parttime, I believe. Flexible work hours minimize cost of direct labor for stores, not just AMES. They are not salesmen but shelf stockers. Some day the VCR training tape will teach them to sell to the customers, slow movers for X'mas gifts in May. Turn over is making customers stock merchandise in their home for future use.
