Unbundling Ulterior Motives.....

>>Thanks but this still doesn't answer my Win2000 question
If Novell directory customers want to run Novell's directory product on Win2000, why should they have to pay Microsoft for Active Directory too?

A really simple untechnical question, that is directly relevant at this point given the Court's decision in the Microsoft case regarding remedies.

Why should Novell directory customers have to pay Microsoft for Active Directory?

Someone from Novell care to answer?>>

YES!!!

Now that you've helped crystallize the core issue Paul, let's take this ONE step further.

Question: Who developed AD?

Answer: A team of business/marketing analysts, engineers, developers, etc.

Question: Who benefits from the innovative work these "teams" create?

Answer: Microsoft.

But there's this great other great "team" which is all wrapped up inside Novell which is trying to sell, bundle, tie, and integrate a much better product (NDS) into systems/places/networks that talk to the net in the same manner and way that Microsoft has been doing.

Just as Gates doesn't want "his" team to be FREE, so, too, Novell doesn't want "their" team to be FREE.

Every core team of developers and engineers, if you asked them, would like to get the chance to claim more of personal control over a domain for themselves on some platform somewhere, sometime, etc.

Such is the nature of the recent NOT.COM phase which purported to be the answer for this dream, at least until the venture capital money dried up.

The fact remains: Old Business models, by definition, are chock full of hidden agendas and ulterior motives. NOT disclosing ONE thing makes someone/somewhere/sometime suspect. This fact rests at the transformative core of TPJ's landmark decision to split Microsoft in two.

Looking a the entire record, the judge concluded that the core nature of Microsoft - the company/culture/mindset - could not be TRUSTED to be honest, truthful, open, fair, etc.

So what's next?

NDS vs. AD?

A better product that's an unbundled orphan

vs.

A bundled inferior product which Gates and Balmer would claim represents that word they used over and over and over and over and over and over and over again: INNOVATION.

Sorry folks.

NOT!!!

And I'm sorry Novell, NOT!!!!

For this Next Phase is going to "go higher" than the Old (Dog eat Dog) Business Model. Forget about Gates and Balmer clutching to Windows, bundling in an inferior AD and trying to possess and control their way to a repeat performance of the browser wars.

Now we are onto the Directory Wars.

But all is very, very quiet on the Western Front.

Novell and Microsoft aren't saying much these days.

For the fact remains, their possessive, controlling, tightfisted, power and fear based models are losing their grip.

Forget about "Active Directory" or "Novell Directory Services" for a moment.

If you are a developer, engineer or whatever, ask yourself "who am I really helping and serving when I use these two "competing" technologies? to build something which adds value."

Boil it all down to the bottom line core and, if you are true to the core values which should be motivating all of us, we should all answer.........

OTHERS.

Microsoft, Novell, Sun, Oracle, IBM and all the rest of these Old Technology monoliths need to begin to wake up about what's really happening inside this viral, pervasive, empowering ENERGY and TRUST which is powering the Internet while transforming the world.

Helping and Serving Others is where ALL technology must head for if it doesn't individuals - from Mom/Pop, Tom, Jill or even grandma leading all the way to the next government empower/filtered official ruling - will be making their own decisions on "who they trust and who they want to spend their time with."

For everything is going to boil down to TIME and TRUST.

Microsoft became the company it is today by marketing like hell, hacking away with reckless abandon while making strategic, tactical decisions which working to lock people behind their various Windows-centric dams.

Novell became the company it is today by failing miserably at marketing, creating magnificent code and because they failed spinning webs where Microsoft excelled they never had the opportunity to make strategic, tactical decisions which could work to lock people behind their various NetWare-centric dams.

So we have this NEW quiet, hidden battle going on in this Internet services/infrastructure race. And there are a lot of players vying for attention - i.e., our time and trust. Gates is betting he has time on his side and can win on appeal while rallying the forces of blind consumer-capitalism to his side. Meanwhile he can continue to market like hell and while continuing to - quietly and more carefully this time - make strategic, tactical decisions which - over time - will continue the process of gradually locking/pointing much of these emerging net applications to MSFT's platform.

For all it takes is for Gates to create less than 1/2 of ONE percent incompatibility with other platforms to continue the process of gaining 90+% marketshare. All he has to do is be more careful next time in hiding, spinning and how he's going to pull this off.

And now that Gates has become Microsoft's Chief Software Architect, I'm sure he plans to take a much more active role in NOT getting caught.

Boil it all down and you have ONE, BIG cynical game of chicken with a huge doses of politics, money and power.

Where's Novell in all of this?

If they continue to play holier than thou while hide behind Hatch's skirt their history of possessing, clutching and controlling their great technology will confine them to either oblivion or BUYOUT - with the later being a more likely possibility.

So will there ever come the day when developers and engineers CAN feel free to create massively GREAT code which leverages and solves massive problems which can change the world inside and outside various verticals?

My guess is that we are heading to this New, OPEN promised land sooner than Novell and Microsoft and the others in the Old Guard would like to believe.

Look for the spirit of Open Source begin to invade the entire sales and marketing distribution chain: i.e. collaborative sales, licensing, giveback and cooperative arrangements. Tribes of engineers, developers, business managers, sales and marketing folks that can come together, create and license the help others grow the of TRUST and ENERGY inside their networks faster and better and with a more truthful, open spirit that others.

This is already starting to happen with the growth and development of these islands of Net-based services. The next challenge will be in how these services are all going to talk to one another - market, bill, distribute, service, evolve, etc.

For this is the REAL Next Race: Helping and Serving others.

NOT playing a game of chicken poker in the dark against the federal government while you privately thumb your noses at the system.

And NOT by standing on the sidelines with McNeally, Hatch, TPJ and others saying "I told you so, I told you so....we have better code!!"

We are moving into a NEW world were these OLD power/control branded combines are going to be less and less relevant.

Why?

Because these folks will lose out in the race to create the REAL currency which will drive all future growth in the REAL Internet ahead: TRUST and ENERGY.

We don't trust Microsoft.

We don't trust Novell.

The energy is just not there.

Now let me talk to INDIVIDUALS inside those companies and a whole NEW model of excitement, ideas, energy and trust will emerge.

These companies are going to lose their good people because more and more of the idea people who have the guts and energy and trust are going to want to step out on their own to make an impact on the world. They aren't going to tolerate the BS.

There's a ton of INDIVIDUALS out there who need help.

And this NEW model is going to evolve to help them.

Imagine the massive, incredible energy, trust and goodwill that we expose the ulterior motives, forgive ourselves and stop trying to beat each other up.

Over what?

To control data and information??

I say BS.

For this Next Phase is all about growing, developing, supporting, sharing and serving up a growing number of NEW knowledge pies.

And you know what?

These knowledge pies have been proven to GROW!!!

These knowledge pies have been proven to help and serve others.

These knowledge pies have NO LIMITS!!

And with these knowledge pies, TRUSTING and RISKING, HELPING and SERVING is actually rewarded.

How?

Through the creation of TRUST and ENERGY which nobody can take, steal, control or subvert.

We're talking about how mankind is going to learn how to CREATE NEW currencies which transcend MONEY: TRUST and ENERGY.

Does this sound interesting and exciting to anyone??

Doesn't the DOJ vs. Microsoft case look very naive and quaint by comparison.

Could the Novell - i.e.,. NEW - community actually live up and transform into embracing it's name?

Sorry for the length of this. Just throwing this out there......

Peace.

GO!!
