Check out this comment by Coleman on CNBC, and how the reporting comments are phrased.
Coleman used words that Microsoft enthusists might find unkind.

Microsoft's landmark two-way split ruling gets applause from Microsoft's direct competitors. If Wednesday's ruling sticks, Microsoft's track record of playing catch-up to dominate key niches crumbles, says BEA Systems (BEAS: news, msgs) CEO Bill Coleman, a former Sun Microsystems executive and long-time Microsoft competitor.

"In 20 years, Microsoft has only moved ahead when they were forced to by competition," Coleman said. "They have only brought out innovations when somebody else came out with something that threatened them. Windows was a response to Apple Computer. The browser was a response to Netscape. Now they're trying to respond to Sun's Java move."

Operating systems, for the most part, are old hat. The software is a far less important market than it was in the personal computer industry's early going, analysts say. Many of the key functions business customers and consumers use to conduct trade are in database software and applications other than Microsoft's. Also, Linux software companies are practically giving operating systems away.
