Ericsson has won a US$80 million contract to upgrade Singapore Telecom Mobile's GSM network and ready it for GPRS services. The operator says new high-speed services will be available by the end of this year.

SingTel Mobile has already agreed to test GPRS roaming with other mobile operators, including Hong Kong-based C&W HKT, Hutchison and Peoples Telephone, and Swisscom Mobile.

The network upgrade deal includes Ericsson's 900/1800 dual band technology, network capability, and WAP and intelligent network solutions.

The GPRS network capability will allow SingTel Mobile to offer mobile Internet and other IP-based applications at speeds ten times faster than is currently possible on mobile networks.

"GPRS will enable a broad spectrum of communications and information functionality," said Alan Ho, vice president of Ericsson Singapore. "It is an ideal bearer for WAP and is dedicated to, and especially designed for, data communications," he added. <<
