This was the exact argument used in the early 70's, in relation to the PC industry, when a little dogpoop company tried the chip biz. Needless to say, the argument couldn't have been more mis-guided, and INTC is now one of the generals of the NASDAQ.

Secondly, QCOM now controls roughly 90% of the CDMA chip market and they no longer manufacture handsets. The market is obviously there, and as NOK repeatedly has proven, CDMA ASICs are not the handset manufacturers core competency.
