Glenayre, NEC System Integration & ConstructionTo Build $6.3 Million Wireless Network for Tokyo Web Link

Network Will Serve 200,000 Subscribers in Tokyo Metropolitan Region

TOKYO, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS) announced it has received an order from NEC System Integration and Construction Limited (NESIC), Glenayre's distributor in Japan, worth US $6.3 million to build a comprehensive wireless data network for Tokyo Web Link Inc. (formerly Tokyo Telemessage Inc.) that will serve the greater Tokyo area. Glenayre also received an order for services to support the network valued at approximately US $550,000.

According to Kenji Takagi, Senior Managing Director of Tokyo Web Link, the system is a wise business decision. "We need a more economical way to support multiple channels and transmission links. Glenayre's techniques of linking multiplexing and multiple channel switching lowers overall network operating costs. This will help our company to improve our net earnings. We also need to introduce new enhanced services to our subscribers. Glenayre messaging terminals provide many features and services which allow us to increase our revenue and provide customer retention. Most importantly, we need the same system that can support 2-way messaging for telemetry applications. We are pleased that Glenayre has solutions that meet our requirements. We will be starting a 2-way messaging trial using ReFlex technology in the 1st half of 2001. We plan to upgrade the system to rollout 2-way telemetry services in Tokyo in 2001."

"Based on our working relationship with Glenayre and our knowledge of their quality network hardware and enhanced services platform, we did not hesitate in recommending that Tokyo Web Link's network be built using Glenayre products and supported by Glenayre services. Additionally, Glenayre's system can quickly and easily be upgraded to support two-way messaging when Tokyo Web Link rolls out its ReFLEX network in 2001, which makes it the best choice for this network" stated Shigeru Nara, General Manager, NEC System Integration & Construction, Ltd.

Eric Doggett, president and chief executive officer of Glenayre, stated, "We are pleased that Tokyo Web Link chose to work with NEC Systems Integration and Construction and to utilize Glenayre wireless network hardware to help optimize network resources and introduce innovative and exciting new features for Tokyo Web Link's customers. Tokyo Web Link's decision to choose Glenayre products and services is a further proof of Glenayre's leading position in wireless messaging industry. The Tokyo Web Link contract signifies our continued evolution of the Glenayre product line with the development of new applications and Solutions for an @ctive World."

The system, which will initially support one way messaging, will be based on Glenayre's GL3000 wireless messaging switch. There will be one GL3000RL and four GL3000RES models in the delivered system, controlling a network of GL-T8321 base stations. Shipping will begin in June 2000, installation will be complete by October, and the system will be operational in December. About Glenayre:
