There are some advantages associated with the dielectric make up of fiber that would make it attractive. Such as immunity to lightning transport to residential interiors, and the avoidance of a number of NEC and National Fire and Safety code issues associated with electrical anythings. But most importantly for the latent FTTx industry is its ability to dispel the almost wives-tale like argument about fiber not being able to support lifeline services, in this age of cellular/pcs/pda/captain-video-gadgets-of-the-day/pagers, and long-life battery storage capabilities. These options, not to mention the last ditch cigarette lighter approach for folks who don't have generators at home, that I alluded to a couple of days ago, upstream.
