Excerpts from declaration on British envoy's killing

By Associated Press, 6/9/2000 09:29

Excerpts from the communique by the Greek terrorist group November 17,
which claimed responsibility Friday for the slaying of British Defense
Attache Brig. Stephen Saunders in Athens:

The United States and its partners are trying to take advantage of
their indisputable economic and military superiority and present
themselves as a new and powerful empire ... But the basic weakness of
this empire is its failure to impose a new pro-American regime in
Baghdad since (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein is still there and a year
after air strikes in Yugoslavia, (President Slobodan) Milosevic is still
in place.

It is not an unimportant fact that the West considers today its top
priority the struggle against terrorism, which is nothing but the
justified and loyal popular resistance against contemporary Fascism ...
They know that the Tomahawk and cruise (missiles) and Phantom (fighter
jets) can destroy countries, but there exists powerful and simple means
to oppose them: the gun and dynamite.

The armies of the United States and other big Western countries are
composed of mercenaries professional killers who carry out attacks
against people. Each and every one of us has the indisputable right and
obligation to strike them wherever they can and in every way.

''We decided to execute (Saunders) because he took part in the planning
of the barbaric airstrikes on Yugoslavia ... He is among those
responsible for last year's Nazi-like crimes and the assassinations of
thousands of unarmed people, the destruction of the country's
infrastructure and economy. We targeted a senior British officer not
only because Britain was actively involved in the air strikes as it
still participates in the continuing air strikes of Iraq but because
British policy as
expressed by (Prime Minister Tony) Blair, (Foreign Secretary Robin)
Cook and (NATO Secretary-General Lord) Robertson, surpassed the audacity
and cynicism even of the Americans.''
