I think one's time is better spent selecting individual stocks rather than trying to divine "the market", Greenspan's next move, etc. Since January 11, my results in individual stocks are:

IRA +41.1%
Charitable Remainder Trust +11.8% (inflexible to trade)
Taxable account +42.8%

Much of the problem with the DJIA and S&P was their extreme overbought condition due to so many folks blindly buying the indexes. When everyone does that, you get stocks like KO, PG, etc. bid up to astronomical levels. There are always wonderful values out there if one takes the time and effort to look for them but it takes more time than buying index funds.
