The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred ABOUT 30 MILES (50 KM) WEST-SOUTHWEST OF HUA-LIEN, TAIWAN OR ABOUT 90 MILES (150 KM) SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF TAIPEI, TAIWAN at 12:23 PM MDT today, Jun 10, 2000 (Jun 11 at 2:23 AM local time in Taiwan). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.2 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received from other seismograph stations. THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF MINOR INJURIES. THIS EARTHQUAKE IS IN THE SAME AREA AS THE MAGNITUDE 7.6 EARTHQUAKE OF SEPTEMBER 20, 1999.
