When I have to test some sections of fence to make sure they're working well, I often get a piece of grass...something like timothy...and then just lick the end of it. Then I hold the wet piece of grass about 2 inches in from the end and touch it against the fence strand... If the fence is working... well... I'll know it soon enough... Nice little painless shock... and that's good enough proof that things are working A-OK....
