kramerken,
yes this represents a threat to Vari-L's VCO business, but not an immediate threat. UWB is a major discontinuous innovation for every type of radio frequency transmission. BUT... they are presently tangled in some serious regulatory hurdles that will keep them from bringing products to market for some years. Because UWB transmits over a wide range of frequencies, the FCC won't license them for anything besides limited research (and police) use until they prove they won't interfere with transmissions that are licensed to use those frequencies. Their concept eliminates the need to lock to a carrier frequency (which is what VCO's are used for) because their transmission doesn't use a carrier. Vari-L's VCO's are going to have their day in the sun before UWB becomes a significant market factor. Once UWB gets going, we'll just have to see where Vari-L is at that time. (along with more than a few other companies)
