Qualcomm CEO expects China Unicom to use 3G CDMA
HONG KONG, June 12 (Reuters) - Irwin Jacobs, chief executive officer of digital wireless company Qualcomm Inc
(NasdaqNM:QCOM - news), said on Monday he expects China Unicom, China's number two telecoms provider, to use
Qualcomm's 3G CDMA technology but was unclear when.
Referring to Qualcomm's third generation CDMA standard, he told Reuters in an interview: ``My guess is that it will be
(Qualcomm's) 1X that they do select.''
On the timing of deployment of 3G CDMA, he said: ``That's up to them, obviously, but the manufacturers are clearly getting
ready for that.''
Last week, Qualcomm announced technology sharing agreements with eight Chinese manufacturers to develop
CDMA-based products.
Qualcomm won an agreement in February to build a wireless network for China Unicom, but the deal was quickly put on
hold by the Beijing government.
Early this month, China Unicom said it was scrapping plans to use current-generation CDMA technology, opting instead to
stick with its European GSM network. It said it would use Qualcomm's CDMA, or code division multiple access, for
later-generation systems.
Qualcomm's China woes have contributed to a precipitous drop in the firm's stock, which peaked in January at US$200 and
closed on Friday at US$79-1/16.
