OT: Internet Use Up Big in Japan (from Nikkei news) Monday, June 12, 2000 Japan Internet Users To Top 20 Million In June - Survey TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Internet users in Japan will likely top the 20 million mark this month, according to a survey commissioned by the Internet Association of Japan. The survey conducted by Access Media International Corp. (unlisted) estimates that Japanese Internet users amounted to about 19.38 million at the end of February 2000. This represented a 128.5% increase on the same time a year earlier, the report noted. Over the year, about 4.23 million users came on line for the first time, Access Media said. Access Media forecasts that the number of Internet users is likely to climb to about 22.6 million by December 2000. The company estimates that 20.09% of Japanese homes had Internet access by the end of February. Access Media noted a spurt in Internet use among women and young people over the year. The report also recorded a big jump in the number of people accessing the Internet via their cellphones. About 9.1% of Internet users said that they used their cellphone to get online - a fourfold increase compared with a year earlier. The survey's findings are based on responses from 34,620 households, Access Media said. It was the fifth annual survey of Internet use in Japan produced by the company.
