Mornin', Mike:

Yes a home page can be given to you initially by an ISP. But within five seconds, you can change it. Pop! There goes the ISP eyeball/ear initial contact advantage.

Don't understand your hypothesis, which, IMHO, you take the extreme. Sure there will be a choice of platforms, & some platforms will offer some modicum of choice regarding "service." However the ISP, as you correctly state, holds the gateway to the Internet, which is analogous to the public thoroughfare, & hence will always hold importance whether its as a home page or advertising interface.

The bottom line is that, as I see it, is that if you choose to go out onto the public virtual ROW's, your Internet provider will have control of what you see, experience, have choice of, as you begin your excursion. Its sorta analogous as having control of what your garage looks like every morning before you get in your car & take off for work or wherever you're headed. Of course, you can take the private route (ie. out the backdoor) to play in your private VPN backyard, but as far as the public ROWs are concerned, whether its twisted pair, cable, wireless, satellite, IMHO, the ISP will be your gateway to the "free world."

JMO. Gotta roll.
