It got a big help from Illinois Governor Ryan since he's put a hold on Illinois executions. Then again Illinois turned loose more people from death row last year than were executed. Seems like the Chicago cops and the Cook County DA had been playing fast and loose with some evidence. As far as successful appeals, that doesn't mean 2/3 have been turned loose. You can win an appeal but stay locked up.
