With both DISH and DirecTV coming out with Ka-band within a year, they may be quite competitive to the cellular-based broadband offerings. And both have in common the great advantage of being able to bypass the local telco.

John,

Are you sure about this? First, Gilat is providing broadband for Dish under an agreement. Second, Gilat may be competitive with cellular for broadband but not for hand held devices. The satellite dishes used by Gilat and Hughes are still quite big.

Third and most important, Gilat is the only satellite company that can bypass the telco. DirectTV/Hughes uses the phone line for uploads. I know Hughes/DirectTV is working on a telco-less solution but Gilat has patented two-way satellite communication.

I have invested in Gilat.
