ALLTEL Signs $105M Deal to Purchase and Deploy ADSL-ready Equipment From Advanced Fibre Communications
PETALUMA, Calif., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications©, Inc. (AFC) (Nasdaq: AFCI - news), a leader in multi-service broadband solutions for the telecommunications industry, today announced a three-year contract extension with ALLTEL Corporation (NYSE: AT - news), Little Rock, Ark. The agreement calls for continued supply and deployment of AFC's UMC1000© Multi-Service Access Platform (MSAP) through ALLTEL's product distribution division, ALLTEL Communications Products, Inc., (ACP). The new contract is valued at approximately $105 million.

Under the terms of the agreement, AFC will supply ALLTEL with its UMC1000© SYSTEM 7.0 MSAP, which is ADSL-ready. In addition to ADSL services, the UMC1000© MSAP can provide ALLTEL and its distributors with a full suite of other services, including additional POTS lines, ISDN, T1/E1, HDSL and SDSL over copper, fiber and wireless transport technologies.

``We are delighted to sign such a significant agreement with such a valued customer,'' said Jack Ermey, vice president of national local exchange carrier sales for AFC. ``ALLTEL Communications Products is not only the primary supplier of AFC's ADSL/ATM-based UMC1000© for their affiliate companies, but they are also one of the leaders in the telecommunications distribution market.''

Since 1995, ACP has been distributing AFC's UMC1000© MSAP to local ALLTEL companies, and has been a distributor to non-affiliate companies for the past year and a half. The company is one of only two national AFC distributors and will retain its right to re-sell AFC's UMC1000© to affiliate and non-affiliate companies throughout the U.S.

``By signing this agreement, the efforts to sell the AFC product line outside of our ALLTEL-affiliated business is greatly enhanced,'' said Bob Cori, vice president of ALLTEL Communication Products. ``Potential markets include our vast listing of public service providers as well as our end-user customers.''

The UMC1000© MSAP overcomes distance barriers faced by solutions that rely upon central office deployment and it's a modular-type platform, offering carriers the ability to deploy a full suite of narrowband and broadband services from a single platform. ALLTEL believes the UMC1000's© ability to rapidly and cost-effective deploy a variety of telephony services such as DSL to suburban and rural customers complements one of the company's objectives -- deploying state-of-the-art equipment that provides broadband services to suburban and rural America.
