Beware of this article. It is not a very good "primer", as its premises and conclusions are very MTI-centric. Because MTI is a down scale architecture, this article does not apply to the technologies offered by EMC and NTAP.
If you wish for me to go into a more detailed critique, I could, but let me just give you an example:
Table 1 attempts to classify different kinds of applications as appropriate for NAS or SAN. For example, server consolidation is in the "Use SAN" category. Well, server consolidation is also what NTAP is doing with web hosting, e-mail, newsnet, and databases, among others. One cannot generalize.
Under "Performance Sensitive" it says "Use SAN". I am sure that those who are using NAS for OLTP, RDBMS, and Web page serving would disagree.
It is a decent article when taken in context and supplemented with other information. |
