On paper trading - (I'm the one who started this stuff) I've been trading for 9 months and have rules and some general setups. My main problems are overtrading and gambling, and not being patient with buying on pullbacks, selling short on failed rallies etc. I was "brought up" in the bull market and mainly played breakouts. After 3 months of floundering I'm still trying to shake that way of trading. There are days when I do well and days where I backslide. I'm still surviving and feel like without real money it just isn't real. That's why in my original post I was thinking about possibly trading issues I know well only and paper trading others. (I paper traded MSTR for a great short today <g>) But I still feel kind of in between in a way. Meaning I'm a beginner but I have my rules and know what I should do but need more patience, self control and need to be more choosy. In any case I'm still in the game and am learning a lot every day.
