There were 2 deer that were living back in our fields earlier this spring... used to see them just about every time I went for a walk with the dogs. Unfortunately, around here, most of the "wildlife territory" is cut up by highways, and as luck would have it, one of the deer was hit by a truck in front of our laneway about 2 weeks ago.

Now the other deer is running around in a fairly frantic state most of the time. I feel very sorry for it when I see it. Sometimes it sleeps in the field near my goats... for the company and for the feeling of safety in numbers. A couple of days ago, I surprised the deer while it was sleeping... quite by accident. It jumped up and bounded away, but it's getting its new antlers and the velvet is peeling away from them. It was almost comical-looking as the antlers had all of this stuff waving around from them as the deer leaped across the field.

But I don't think the deer will survive for long. It almost got hit crossing the highway this morning. There's a strip of forest on the other side of the road from my land and the deer and other wildlife tend to regard that section of forest as an extension of the forest on my side of the road. It seems that there is just too much attraction to try to cross the road... much to their peril...
