Most generally accepted scientific theories are taught, at least in the early stages, as fact. Kids all over America are being taught the theory of plate tectonics as fact, but nobody objects to that. If they become geology majors, they go more deeply into the development of the theory, the refinements and the process which brought it to "generally accepted theory" status, and the gaps that still remain in our understanding of the process. This material is not generally covered in elementary classrooms, for obvious reasons.

The theory of evolution is incomplete, but it is the only available explanation that adequately and scientifically explains the physical evidence. That is generally considered to be good enough.
