If museums started jettisoning Matisse for Peter Max I might worry, but I don't see that happening. They are more likely to add a new space for Peter and Co., and to that I have no objection. Let the visitors see it all, and time will tell what has merit.

I think the literary canon should be a lot more flexible than it is even in college, and I'm not sure that high school lit classes should follow it at all. The high school "lit" teacher is likely to be introducing reading to people who have read very few books indeed, and I think the first priority should be to assign books that the students will enjoy. I don't care if the books aren't pillars of the literary canon; the point is to teach that reading can be fun. Once that's established, it's possible to move on. Try to start a non-reader off on Homer or Shakespeare, and you have a non-reader for life.
