TORONTO (CP) -- Franco-Nevada Mining and South Africa's Gold Fields were
expected to announce their merger in a deal that would create a $5
billion gold mining giant, the National Post reported today.

The deal, which could be announced as early as today, will see Gold
Fields shareholders receive one of Toronto-based Franco-Nevada shares
for every three Gold Fields shares, the paper said quoting sources.

About 150 million Franco-Nevada shares worth $2.5 billion will be issued
to complete the deal.

The two companies declined to comment Monday. (National Post)
