NQL Solutions Files Patent for Lateral Web Crawling Technology
One in a Series of Patent Applications Filed by the Company
SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2000--The NQL Solutions(TM) division of AlphaServ.com(TM) (Nasdaq NM: ALMI) Tuesday announced it has filed for a patent application for a lateral Web site crawling technology.

The company believes that the traditional method being used by Web search companies for "crawling" sites on the Internet is not as sophisticated and accurate as the lateral crawling technique offered by NQL Solutions.

The patent application describes a unique method of crawling Web sites, in particular shopping and retail sites, whereby an intelligent agent, bot or spider are used to distinguish the difference between a continuation and detail page.

Traditional Web crawlers can easily miss information if they fail to take continuation pages into account, especially when they are instructed to only crawl sites to a specific depth.

"This lateral crawling technology is now incorporated into our core Network Query Language(TM) technologies and applications such as Spotlight(TM)," said Douglas J. Tullio, AlphaServ.com chairman, chief executive officer and president.

"As innovators in Internet technology, we strive to develop the most efficient ways to gather and convert information across networks and integrate them into the NQL platform. We believe that securing patents early for our Internet technologies will provide NQL with a competitive advantage as this market grows and matures."

The company's first patent application for a data conversion technology recently received "notice of allowance" by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The company has two additional utility patent applications pending before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including its Object Recognition Engine (ORE) and its flagship Network Query Language(TM) (NQL(TM)).
