Could someone smarter than the average bear please tell me a few things: can't JDSU do this, is Corvis any good and is it publicly traded?

Don't know about smarter than the average bear, particularly if it is a Cal bear (higher average GPA and SAT scores than Harvard), but:

1. Corvis is a systems vendor, like Cienna (or Sycamore). JDSU is a component vendor (like New Focus). I expect there are JDSU components in the Corvis system (I know there are New Focus components in it). The competitors to worry about (in addition to the above) are Lucent, Nortel and Cisco.

2. The customers seem to think theat Corvis is very good, but it is still early. An all-optical core is certainly appealing and is where the networks are going, but eliminating all of the OEO (optical-electronic-optical) conversions from the core requires more functionality in the network elements closer to the edge (hence the recent agreement with Avici). There is an open question on when these companion devices required for network functionality are going to be available.

3. Corvis is not publically traded (yet). They have filed for a $400 million IPO, with no official pricing or schedule yet (that I have seen, anyway). Many expect it to be THE premier IPO of the technology sector during 2000 (this year's Sycamore).
