The facet of the theory of evolution which most interests me is its social history, the process by which it became widely accepted as the most likely of all theories ... Darwin popularised it more than he invented it ... man had been using coal for a long time, finding pressed vegetation and animal life in it ... miners clearly had a view of the record of huge time scales and succession of life forms in the geology ... and this was open to all on river banks ... i read a great article on this, can't remember where ... it was the story of the struggle of the scientific method over dogmatic faith, basically.
