SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2000--The U.S. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) markets are experiencing tremendous growth, but a lack of experience by the end user is limiting the potential of this market. There will be expanded market growth once end users understand the benefits of this segment of the intrusion detection market.
According to new strategic research from Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), U.S. Network Security Markets: Intrusion Detection Systems, this market generated $3.3 million in revenues in 1996, which jumped to $62.3 million by 1999. It is projected this market will increase its revenues to $1.7 billion by 2006. Not only do end users have to be aware of the benefits of IDS, they must also have personnel educated in understanding and implementing the technology.
"There is a lack of skilled personnel within end-user enterprises to fully implement an enterprise-wide security policy," says Frost & Sullivan Information Technology Industry Manager Rufus Connell. "The trouble is that security is not as attractive as other markets, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and systems management. While these growth areas attract quality software engineers and business analysts, security software, with its strong growth and huge potential, will continue to struggle."
Most security applications are complex in nature and are often difficult to employ and not well understood except by trained experts. Market participants will need to simplify their products to increase acceptance.
"User interfaces (UIs) that historically have been excessively complex have limited their appeal," says Connell. "This difficulty of implementation has limited the rapid acceptance of these products in the marketplace. Once vendors simplify UIs and make these products easier to use for the non-technical person, the market growth will become unlimited."
There are many technologies and products within the security software market. While all the competition in the market has led to a decrease in prices, the increased number of choices also confuse the end user.
"Vendors in this market need to educate the market not only on the advantages to the enterprise of implementing these solutions, but on how they work, how they can be used and how they interoperate with each other," says Connell.
