[ATM running over ADSL]

<<I read this morning regarding the announcement by ALA (Alcatel) that S.G. Thompson was commiting to the ALA ATM approach to high capacity Internet and Intranet rather than ADSL DMT. Have I missed something here?>>

Yes. ATM is a higher-level networking protocol that can run on top of ADSL. That's what SGS-Thomson has licensed from Alcatel: the chipsets and related software that implement ATM running over DMT ADSL.
