<<But what IS the justification?>> There is a parameter that surrounds the human condition that defines things that we have the ability to deal with and beyond it the things we have no way to deal with. It is human nature to test limits. We don't all feel bound to test the limits of criminality that go beyond the parameters of humanity but some do. At the same time we are all being tested as to how we can deal with the situations we are given. Its the human condition. The set up for the human condition is such that we have to struggle to survive and to thrive. We must also do that while considering our role in compassion for others. Certainly we should be merciful and charitable as we are able and as it is appropriate. In the case of someone who has fallen to a less than honorable status through some tough circumstances and who is responsible for offenses against one or all of us, we must consider this course. I use a simple three tier test. 1)The perp recognizes their misdeed as something that is wrong and that they should work to overcome or correct it. 2) The perp is remorseful for the deed. 3) The perp intends to correct the situation, not just as a deal to get out of jail but because they see that as the "right" thing to do. Given this, then yes, forgive them and support them in renewing or rebuilding their membership in humanity. Without this three tier commitment they remain outside the parameters of the humanity that gives the rest of us any means to deal with them, except as victims. The justification for capital punishment is that the crime is so awful that there is no way for the perp to reasonably or convincingly establish their qualifications to ever reenter society, let alone parole for good behavior as we now have. They have had the opportunity in this life to be tested and have failed irreparably. Time to go on to what ever is next. Best/only reasonable outcome. The only reason to avoid it is to give people like you the feeling that you didn't do something bad to the perp. The perp failed, he earned his F, you didn't give it to him. Why try to keep it from him?
