QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Receives 2000 CDMA Industry Achievement Award For Third-Generation Pioneer
CDMA Development Group Recognizes QUALCOMM's Significant Contributions to the Advancement of Wireless 3G Technology for Creation and Delivery of 1xMC Chipset
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2000-- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT), the Company's CDMA chipset hardware and software division, has been awarded the 2000 CDMA Industry Achievement Award for Third-Generation Pioneer from the CDMA Development Group (CDG) during the 5th Annual CDMA World Congress in Hong Kong this week. QCT was recognized for the significant contributions made in the advancement of CDMA technology for the development of the third-generation (3G) 1x Multi-Carrier (1x) chipset. In December 1999, QUALCOMM conducted successful over-the-air phone calls using the MSM5000(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software, and handset manufacturers worldwide have been receiving MSM5000 engineering samples, together with the system software and development platforms, since January 2000. In addition, major infrastructure manufacturers worldwide have selected QCT's CSM5000(TM) Cell Site Modem (CSM(TM)) solution, which provides operators with up to twice the overall capacity of voice users over IS-95A/B systems, supports up to 32 simultaneous users on a single chip, and enables data rates of up to 307.2 kilobits per second (kbps) on both forward and reverse links. Working closely with QUALCOMM, manufacturers and network operators expect deployment of commercial 1x systems using the MSM5000 and CSM5000 chipsets to begin before the end of the year.

``QUALCOMM has repeatedly shown that it deserves the title as pioneer of 3G services and world leader in CDMA technology,'' said Perry La Forge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group. ``The rapid development of QCT's 1x solution is further evidence that the future of communications -- both voice and high-speed data -- is wireless, and that the future of wireless is CDMA.''

``We are grateful that QCT's hard work and efforts in developing a 3G solution with superior voice and data capabilities have been recognized,'' said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. ``The production of a real-world 1x solution is the result of an ongoing partnership among QUALCOMM and its partners in CDMA manufacturing and network operations. We are committed to solidifying our 3G solutions and continuing -- with our partners -- to drive the development of advanced 3G wireless technologies and services.''

QCT's roadmap for the near future of 3G telecommunications includes not only the MSM5000 and CSM5000 chipsets, which will allow manufacturers to roll out the world's first 1x systems, but also an extended family of total 3G solutions, including advanced 1x and 3x MSM and CSM chipsets and system software; High Data Rate (HDR) technology, incorporating a flexible architecture based on standard Internet Protocol (IP) and providing a spectrally efficient 2.4 million bits per second (Mbps) peak rate in a standard 1.25 MHz channel bandwidth; and a 3G Direct Spread (DS) chipset solution.

QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) is the leading developer and supplier of CDMA chipsets, hardware and software solutions and tools with more than 100 million MSM chips shipped worldwide. QCT supplies chipsets to the world's leading CDMA handset and infrastructure manufacturers including: Acer Peripherals, Inc., ALPS ELECTRIC CO., LTD.; CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD.; DENSO CORPORATION; FUJITSU LIMITED; Hitachi, Ltd.; Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd.; KYOCERA CORPORATION; LG Information and Communications, Ltd.; Samsung Electronics Ltd.; SANYO Electric Co., Ltd.; and Toshiba Corporation, among others.
