Steve, as I understand it the secure digital design identifies the user by a credit card number. If the user wants to download music from a web site, the transaction will be billed to the credit card, if there is a charge for the transaction. Meanwhile, if the user desires to make a copy of the downloaded music, the SD card permits copies only to a device with matching credit card number, effectively protecting copyrighted material. Music publishers have indicated they prefer this method of copyright protection to other methods that would allow unrestricted copying. The industry group has recently negotiated a settlement with MP3.com, which will require up front payments in return for the copying of music selections from CD's or other sources where the copyright had already been paid.

The main point is that SD appears to work easily and does not impede the distribution of copyrighted material. It merely provides a convenient way for those who wish to protect their copyright and still make it available for distribution on the Internet. It works better and easier than Sony's device. Personally, I think there is room for more than one method of copyright protection, but eventually people will gravitate towards the method that works easiest and satisfies both the customers and the music providers.
