i<> The United States invented the Internet and the way to make in ubiquitous.

Hello Dan - I'm tired of reading jingoistic rants, especially when the rant is off base.

US DARPA had a hand funding multiple projects aimed at providing Uncle Sam a bomb proof (literally) computer network, starting in the late 60's. However, the internet, per se, didn't arrive until much later. www was invented at the CERN Labs in Geneva and taken up by academic institutions throughout Europe. (I was using JANET and Usenet in the UK 15 years ago).

GSM is a Government supported boondoggle
The whole internet started off as a government boondoggle, on both sides of the pond.

Your criticism of the state of the 'phone system in Europe is misplaced. I could only connect at 26000 up in Santa Barbara last weekend!

I agree with your criticism of the expense of connecting, but not the quality. BT (in the UK) charges for a local 'phone call, unlike here in the US, where it is free.
However, BSkyB (a UK satellite TV company) is exploiting this by offering free e-mail to subscribers through a modified set top box. Rupert Murdoch is a cunning bugger.

Mobile 'phones have taken off in Europe for the same reason they have taken off over here, they are convenient. It has
nothing to to with antiquated perceptions of poor quality 'phone systems.

The Europeans are behind in mobile phones from the start
That is nonsense. MOT and ERICY were field trialling GSM in Europe during the late eighties and early nineties. Major digital networks were in place in Germany and the UK years before their counterparts in the US.
