Death is not "justice". There is no such thing as justice on this earth imo. There is the practical necessity of segregating the dangerous from society- life imprisonment works fine for that. There is the necessity of consequences for actions- and life imprisonment seems a good enough consequence to me. The illusion of justice for the masses is important to the working of the justice system. The death penalty, the way it is administered- affecting primarily the poor and people of color- seems to work against the illusion of justice that is SO important to keep people buying into society. If people do not believe in justice society breaks down.

I think I have become too civilized to wish a pound of flesh and an eye for an eye. Seeking death in some sort of quest for justice seems strangely primitive to me, and it does not do us any credit (imo) in the eyes of the rest of the civilized world to hold fast to barbarism that other industrialized countries eschew because we like the way it feels.
