OK, so I will ignore CPQ in the BRCD/CSCO equation. What would their role be, anyway? Reseller? CSCO doesn't need a stinkin' reseller!

Anyway, the marriage of FC and IP fits very well with NTAP's technical direction. They intend to cluster multiple (over 2) filers so that a filer in a cluster is able to access data/storage anywhere in the cluster. FC is the preferable media to do this, but has distance limitations. FC over IP solves that problem.

When one considers the possibilities to come from the Orca purchase, it gets a little crazy. Orca is working on "virtual interface" (VI) that takes the management of interfacing with a plethora of filers out of the OS and onto the network interface hardware/software. It makes such a clustered architecture more efficient.

The VI idea also can be applied to the "hosts" in a network so that a Unix app server may be accessing a NTAP filer through a VI, rather than the UNIX OS. I believe that will mean better raw data throughput and less complexity for the sys admin.

I am not pretending to understand all of this. But the visionaries at CSCO/BRCD/NTAP have a plan that will unfold over time. Of course, EMC will benefit from these new partnerships, too. NTAP will benefit more, imo, because it will make the need for EMC's centralized storage management less compelling. NTAP's storage on the edge of the network will be more effective and scalable than it is now.
