That is simply not true.

If I act reasonably, to promote my own interests, by promoting the interests of society, everyone benefits. IT won't affect your afterlife and will only affect your practice of religion as it might affect ME. Your religion stopping at the tip of my nose.

The cruelest most judgmental and least accepting people I've ever met have been religious. And they didn't even know they were what they were. The kindest and most compassionate people I've met have been agnostics and atheists.

If you pin your hopes on an afterlife and make decisions based on it- you could- for example- think it no big thing to deprive a man of life when if he is "good" he gets another anyway and gets a second trial from God. How simple to send the man to his maker for judgment. Greatly reduces the enormity of the action.
